Yes, I know that “Tip of the Day” implies that I will change it daily. I was busy.
Spotlight can be your best friend.
Although not as powerful as QuickSilver,(Did you hear the angels sing as you read that name?) Spotlight can be very helpful to anyone who doesn’t want to hunt through folders to find what they want. It also is a launcher, hit CMD+SPACE, type the name of the app you want, highlight it and hit return. Works the same for files and folders. And it catalogs everything.
So, if you’re like me, and keep your desktop and dock to a bare minimum try out spotlight to find those lost files.
If you are new to OS X, don’t forget about spaces.
Go to System Preferences(Click on the Apple logo in the top left corner) and enable Spaces in the expose/spaces settings. This allows you to have multiple virtual desktops to work from. I don’t like having a bunch of apps open in one space and then cycling between them. With Spaces, I open one program per space and then go to that space with the CONTROL-ARROW keys. I know it sounds like the same thing, but this way I know where each window is hiding because it has to be in that one “space”.
You can drag apps to different spaces, either by dragging it to the edge of the screen, or by left click and hold while using the control-arrow to move to a new space.
Do you use Gimp on the Mac? If so you should look into upgrading Gimp to the Snow Leopard specific version. The difference? The Leopard and Tiger versions were only 32-bit compatible. The Snow Leopard version is 64-bit capable. You can download the 64 bit version here. Since I started to look at Aperture 3, I’ve had my Mac booted into 64-bit mode and I’ve had no problems. -Jack
This tip is a quick one from Ward.
Want to drag a file to another folder and copy it instead of moving it? Press the Option key when you drag that file and it’ll be duplicated rather than moved entirely.
